What do they do?

Ruairidh Morrison and Melanie Brown are a creative couple with a huge passion for what they do...hot-smoking! After a few years living and working in New Zealand, learning about the art and traditions of food smoking, they setup a smokehouse and family home in Melanie's native Ballycastle, where with the help of their twins they are now hot-smoking their delicious native salmon and a few other surprises! Ruairidh, originally from the Scottish Isle of Islay, had always had a notion in the back of his mind that he’d like to have a business smoking salmon—a lingering legacy from his time spent managing Salmon farms, in both his native Scotland and their time in New Zealand. Now, the North Coast Smokehouse is a reality!

Why do we love them?

The couple combines their creativity with some serious science and a desire for sustainable living. Melanie says, "Ruairidh worked for many years in fish health, for New Zealand’s Animal Health Laboratories and then in the science team for Biosecurity New Zealand, and I recently completed a Master of Laws in Environmental Law and Sustainable Development. Our aim is to combine our skills, knowledge and values to develop our business, and lives, along a sustainable, environmentally-friendly path.
